Pixel Drips and Halcyon are the result of a pair of late night synth jams in 2020. My previous release Strobe Diablo was a lot more on the heavy end of the electronic spectrum, so I wanted to try something a little more laid back, minimalist, and unpolished.

Pixel Drips was an experiment in taking digital synths and then trying to get them "out in the real world" a bit more by running them through overdrive pedals and guitar amps, and then setting microphones up in the room to try and get a bit more of a natural reverberation. A lot of the swells are actually the amps being overloaded and crapping out! I then played around with chopping up the recordings and remixing them for the middle 8 sections, basically sampling myself. The drums are my own acoustic kit recordings mixed in with hardware drum machines, and then room mic'ed like the synths.

Halcyon was an experiment in trying to get a more "live" feel with electronic instruments by recording each instrument (bass, main melody, solo) in one take, start to finish. Each instrument is just a single midi track each, sent to an MS-20 clone, with me "performing" the filter sweeps, glide, tuning changes and LFO parameters by hand in real time - a single full song performance for each instrument. The solo takes the same ethos - a one shot performance on the analogue synth with freehand pitch bends.
